Media Outlets Are Purposely Misquoting Rep. Ron DeSantis

In the Florida gubernatorial race, Republican candidate Rep. Ron DeSantis is running against Democratic candidate and socialist Andrew Gillum. Gillum, the mayor of Tallahassee, accused DeSantis of using a comment “straight out of the Trump book”.
What was the horrendous crime committed? Here is DeSantis’s full statement:
“Florida elections are always competitive, and this is a guy who, although he’s much too liberal for Florida, I think he’s got huge problems with how he’s governed Tallahassee, he is an articulate spokesman for those far-left views, and he’s a charismatic candidate. I watched those Democrat debates, and none of that is my cup of tea, but he performed better than those other people there. So we’ve got to work hard to make sure that we continue Florida going in a good direction, let’s build off the success we’ve had on Governor Scott, the last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases and bankrupting the state. That’s not going to work.”
The mainstream media and the left jumped immediately to the part where DeSantis states “...the last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda…” and did what they always do— call racism. It is to be mentioned that Gillum is black.
It is obvious that “monkey up” is a synonym for “mess-up”. But since we are playing kindergarten politics, anyone who dares mention the word “monkey”, regardless of the context, and when a black person is a part of the conversation— is falsely accused of racism.
Headlines read (but are not limited to):
- “DeSantis: Florida voters shouldn’t “monkey this up” by voting for black candidate”
- “Florida's GOP gubernatorial nominee says a vote for his black opponent would 'monkey this up'”
- “Twitter drags Trump-backed Florida candidate for racist comment”
- “DeSantis Already Compared Gillum to a Monkey on Fox News”
- “Rep. Ron DeSantis Slammed for ‘Racist Dog Whistle’ in Post-Primary Interview”
These are gross misreads, and are done purposely in order to paint the false narrative of Republicans being “racist”. There was absolutely nothing racist or degrading in what DeSantis stated or intended to say. It is obvious he is talking about embracing socialist policies in regard to Florida.
The media are simply destroying themselves and are showing how dishonest they will be in order to paint a false narrative. No wonder conservatives are skeptical of the media.
Ron DeSantis would make a terrific governor, and this absurd attack against him simply distracts from the policies he is pushing — it helps give more legitimacy to Gillum’s socialist policies in the eyes of people on the left.
It has become a cliché statement, but no other phrase rings as true: This is why Donald Trump won. People are completely sick of the “politically correct” left. A society that runs on political correctness, to this degree, is a society that distracts itself from what the American people truly care about— progress.
