Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s Comments About Concentration Camps are Disgraceful

U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) recently compared southern border migrant facilities to “concentration camps” on a live social media video.

“The fact that concentration camps are now an institutionalized practice in the home of the free is extraordinarily disturbing, and we need to do something about it,'' the Representative stated. She also added that this administration is an “authoritarian and fascist presidency”.

These comments are completely disgraceful. Politicians and citizens on both sides of the political aisle should condemn these misleading and abhorrent remarks.

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) correctly responded to Cortez’s comments stating: “Please AOC, do us all a favor and spend just a few minutes learning some actual history. 6 million Jews were exterminated in the Holocaust. You demean their memory and disgrace yourself with comments like this.”

Cheney is right— millions of innocent Jewish people were slaughtered in Nazi concentration camps across Europe during World War II. AOC’s comments are insensitive and completely naïve as to what happened during one of human history's darkest times.

The Department of Homeland Security stated that “since May 1...over 144,000 migrants have crossed our southern border illegally”. U.S. Border Patrol agents are working around the clock to ensure that the flood of migrants coming across the southern border daily are taken care of in a humane manner.

However, our system is in need of more assistance and resources. DHS and the Trump Administration specifically requested billions in humanitarian aid:

“On May 1, the Administration requested $4.5 billion in emergency appropriations for DHS, HHS, the Department of Defense, and Department of Justice to address the immediate humanitarian crisis at our southern border. With this crisis growing day to day and no emergency funding, DHS has been forced to surge resources and personnel from the interagency.”

Who is blocking this request? Congressional Democrats, of course. They do not want to admit the Trump Administration is correct in requesting these emergency funds— something so ridiculously petty that it’s laughable.

If Rep. Cortez really cares about taking care of the southern border crisis— and not launching false attacks against the executive— then she would lead the fight in passing the much-needed financial assistance this administration has been asking for.

Instead, she disrespects Holocaust victims, survivors, and descendants. Moreover, she is disrespecting our great men and women in the Border Patrol fighting to protect and serve the migrants during this crisis at our southern border. She is in Congress to serve the American people— not diminish those among us.

The Representative’s comments speak to a larger problem. We as a society need to rise above disgusting statements such as this, stand up for each other, and for the values in which this country was founded. As the social fabric is already torn to shreds, the last thing we need is more misleading, ignorant, and inaccurate statements to cause more division.
